"encounter", examines online relationships and their development within a remote environment.

The project documents the online conversation between two anonymous artists over a period of 30 days (March 20 - April 18 1998). The conversation and relationship developed using email, IRC (Internet Relay Chats) and CU-SeeMe (online video conferencing). The two artists did not know each other's real names, gender or location and took on the pseudonym's "anon1" and "anon2".

The artist's communicated at least once a day over the 30 period and their conversation was documented and updated daily on a web site. Once a week the conversation opened up include the "audience" who participated in IRC chats. This provided an opportunity for anon1 and anon2 to communicate in real time and for the audience who had been "listening" become an active part of the conversation.

On the final day of the project (April 18 1998), the two artists met for a public dinner in Lancaster. The event was broadcast on the Internet and the remote audience was able to interact with the dinners.

This work was developed as part of the "My House & Your House" online residencies, co-ordinated by Furnace, Lancaster and supported by The Arts Council of England.
